چکیده

Abstract Extended grazing strategies have the potential to reduce beef winter-feeding costs. Beef producers can incorporate monoculture cereal crops in their winter swathgrazing programs, but recently, use of polycrops (also known as intercrops or cover crops) is growing. There little information about cattle body performance when forage blends during months. This study evaluated animal oat a polycrop blend (oat, turnip, canola and pea). Forage systems (treatment) were seeded on 12-hectare site, further separated into 2-hectare paddocks. The paddocks June swathed August at hard dough stage for oats. Forty-two crossbred steers randomly allocated one two replicated (n=3) while balancing weight breed composition. Body weights (BW) determined over consecutive days start end grazing, 2-wk intervals throughout 86 d period. Ultrasound backfat, rumpfat intramuscular fat collected trial. At trial, each replicate group fitted with rumen pH/temperature boluses. biomass yield 6,225±651 4,867±471 kg DM ha-1, respectively, mean regrowth 177 1409 respectively. Start-of-test BW (246, 247kg; P = 0.92), end-of-test (304, 303.5; 0.97), average daily gain (0.68, 0.74 d-1; 0.61), backfat change (0.53, 0.69 mm; =0.65), (0.84,1.30 P=0.14) (-0.12, 0.14%; P=0.66) did not differ assigned systems, Other measures temperatures (39.13oC, 38.96oC; P=0.03) pH (6.76, 6.70; P=0.10) These results suggest that may be an alternative swath system

Stockpiled Forage Kochia to Maintain Beef Cows During Winter

Extending grazing into the winter, as opposed to feeding of harvested forages, can increase the sustainability of ranching in the western US. This study was conducted to determine the economic value of grazing stockpiled forage kochia (Kochia prostrata [L.] Scrad.) and crested wheatgrass (Agropyron desertorum [Fisch. Ex Link] Schultes) during the fall and winter. Changes in cow body weight, bod...

Effect of live weight gain of steers during winter grazing: I. Feedlot performance, carcass characteristics, and body composition of beef steers.

Two experiments were conducted to examine the effect of previous BW gain during winter grazing on subsequent growth, carcass characteristics, and change in body composition during the feedlot finishing phase. In each experiment, 48 fall-weaned Angus x Angus-Hereford steer calves were assigned randomly to one of three treatments: 1) high rate of BW gain grazing winter wheat (HGW), 2) low rate of...

The effect of bermudagrass hybrid on forage characteristics, animal performance, and grazing behavior of beef steers.

Bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon [L.] Pers.) is a major feed source for ruminants across the southeastern United States. In 4 consecutive yr, 3 different bermudagrass hybrids, Alicia, Jiggs, and Tifton-85, were evaluated under a low stocking rate as forage and hay sources. The nutritive value, in situ DM digestibility, and performance and grazing behavior of beef steers under similar management w...

Effects of winter growing programs on subsequent feedlot performance, carcass characteristics, body composition, and energy requirements of beef steers.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of winter growing program on subsequent finishing performance, carcass merit, and body composition of beef steers. Four steers were slaughtered to determine initial body composition. Remaining steers (n = 256) were blocked by BW and randomly allotted to 1 of 4 treatment groups: 1) ad libitum fed a high-concentrate diet (CF), 2) grazed on ...
